The French are well known for their perfume, champagne, cuisine, art and of course the famous Romantic capital city of the world, Paris.
Part of the French renaissance is of course the motor vehicle brands Citroën, Peugeot and Renault. The Renault brand has particularly caught my attention over the last 3 years, since the launch of the Clio 4.This car has the typical French chic about it!
Just look at it, much in the same way as the best French perfume catches your attention, it’s poetic design leaves one breathless, just like a French kiss would. If there was a car that would get the Toyota and Volkswagen loyalists to pay attention, this is it!
Well this past week I got the chance to spend some time behind the wheel of the Panache Renault Clio 4 dynamique 66kw turbo and… I loved it! It’s a beautiful little car,I’ve always thought It’s a bit on the feminine side but boy did it change my testosterone biased opinion. This Renault Clio has some balls too, it’s powered by the 3cylinder formula 1 inspired turbo engine. This engine produces 140nm of torque peaking at 2500rpm, most of it being available from as low as 1250rpm. However it’s also equipped with an overboost function, that allows for an extra 10nm of torque. It’s a great engine with a bit of getting used to, because at low revs it can get somewhat flat before that turbo kicks in. The good news is, once you know how to get the revs and gear change to work in unison, it’s a pleasure to drive.
- I must admit i didn’t know what to expect from this cheeky little French car. The ride comfort is funtastic, steering feel is good giving you the confidence that you can throw it in corners without being afraid you won’t get the necessary feedback. The brakes are good with Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Distribution, Electronic Stability Control and Emergency Braking Assistance all coming as Standard on this baby. Like a Sexy woman in her Christian Louboutin’s, the Renault Clio struts well in its 17 inch shoes, and they do get my thumbs up!
- Inside the cabin the Clio is kitted with the best lingerie, this includes plush leather seats, a multi function steering wheel, electric windows all round, touch screen radio with navigation and Bluetooth,6 air bags, and for those hot days, the automatic climate control is great, keeping you cool and comfortable in your journeys. The Clio is well packaged with features that sure makes this car a real winner. It’s spacious and comfortable but does have its setbacks with the low slanting roof, and that would make taller occupants feel a bit cramped. However the driving position is awesome. Boot space is more than adequate for a Sexy hatchback of its size.
Economy wise the Clio managed to give me a respectable 6.3 liters per 100 kms. It’s not bad at all considering you’d get around 700km’s on 45l of fuel. It’s also fitted with a stop start energy recovery system allowing you to save fuel on those urban traffic jams.
The Clio comes with a 3 year/45 000km service plan and service intervals are every 15 000km’s. For piece of mind it also comes with a great long mechanical warranty for 5years or 150 000km’s.
So would i buy one as opposed to the Vw Polo, the Kia Rio 1.4 tec,Hyundai’s 120, or its French sibling the Peugeot 208? The answer is …Yes i would, especially because it’s styling is more attractive and sexier than that of the Korean siblings and the Peugeot 208. At R245 000 this Clio is priced just right, it sure is.. a lot of bang for your buck!
